6 Ways to Know That It’s Time To Remodel Your Kitchen…

The easiest thing to notice about your outdated Kitchen is the worn cabinets, the cracked counters, the dated appliances, and more, but what you may not realize is that there are other reasons that its time to remodel! We’ve put together some tips to help you decide when it’s time to remodel your Kitchen.

Do You Have Adequate Space?

Do you have enough counter space, cabinet space and/or floor space in your kitchen? Do you have your refrigerator positioned correctly and its it the right share for your Kitchen?  Keep in mind that a total of 158″ of countertop frontage, 24″ deep with at least 15″ of clearance above, is needed to accommodate all uses, including landing area, preparation/work area and storage.

Do You Have the Correct Traffic Flow?

Are the “cooks” bumping into one another when they prepare meals. If you entertain, do you have an open kitchen plan so that the cook isn’t always left to themselves. Join the party!  The width of a walkway should be at least 36″ and the width of a work aisle should be at least 42″ for one cook and at least 48″ for multiple cooks.

Do You Have Children Who Live or Visit Your Home?

You want to make sure you Kitchen isn’t hazardous to children. Are you cabinets too high to children? Do you have enough space for your growing family. Microwave ovens should be installed 3″ below the principal user’s shoulder but no more than 54″ above the floor to avoid accidents. Avoid sharp corners on countertops with kids around.

Are You Losing Efficiency Because of Your Appliances?

You choice of appliance can cost you more money than you think. New technology in dishwashers, disposals and refrigerators could save you cash and could be well worth the investment. ie. Purchasing a dishwasher with low-energy consumption, delay timer and economy cycle or half-load button will result in saving water AND money.

Is Your Kitchen Universally Designed?

Is your kitchen accessible to individuals with disabilities? Will you be able to use your kitchen safely as you get older? Using Universal Design techniques in the remodel will make sure that the space is as accessible and useable by all people, regardless of age, size or physical ability.

Is Your Kitchen In the Right Location?

Maybe you want a deck on the side or back of your house or maybe a door into your kitchen would help you entertain better outdoors. Maybe you need more or less sunlight getting into your kitchen and a new configuration of your windows is in order. The clear opening of a doorway should be at least 32″ wide, which would require a minimum of 2’10” door. Never locate a cooking surface under an operable window.

Keep a checklist of major and minor problems you are having with your kitchen and incorporate them into your new kitchen renovation.  Make sure to use a qualified kitchen and bath designer, so you get your needs met on time and on budget!
