Modern refers to a specific design movement that arose in the early 20th century and follows stricter guidelines and contemporary is more fluid and tolerates a bit of rule-breaking. Contemporary styles allow for more freedom and trends. Ultimately, modern kitchen designs bridge the gap between traditional kitchen designs and contemporary kitchen designs. While modern and contemporary designs differ greatly from traditional or rustic designs, they definitely are not the same. Each has its own special uniqueness. Below we highlight the main differences and similarities between the two….
Contemporary Kitchens
Contemporary kitchens are usually more colorful and ornamental than modern kitchens. In a contemporary kitchen stick closely to the minimalist movement. Think of an all-white color scheme, metallic finishes, and black accents. Other than white the alternative today is definitely gray. Pair this color with copper accents and warm tones. For example, use poppies or daisies on the table or countertop. Consider matt cabinetry, you can play up the cabinetry by adding glossy accents such as mirrored splashback or glistening granite countertops. And do not forget plenty of light. Natural light creates a warm, homey atmosphere. Say no to blinds and curtains and let the sunshine in. When going for a contemporary design style, think streamlined, cultured, and bold.
The Modern Kitchen
Usually the cabinetry will tell you immediately the difference between modern and contemporary. Modern kitchens tend to edge more toward functionality, offering tons of usable storage space and very user-friendly countertops. Design is typically sleek, using hard edges and economical design to make the cabinets feel more compact and “set in place.” Sparingly decorated with large-scale, bold embellishments and usually dominated by more natural tones, contemporary cabinets rely on sleek, smooth, and polished surfaces to create a level of elegance.
