It’s tough to stay on the cutting edge of design and some classics will be just that always… CLASSIC. But… If you want to keep up with the Joneses then see what hot and whats not below from articles we’ve been reading and leading designers we’ve been watching.
Goodbye Granite
Stone is very expensive and it’s very unpredictable for patterns and such. Sometimes a a slab will just have a pink line running through it for now reason. That’s tough on design and on budgets. Granite is damage and that makes it less popular for families. Synthetic materials that are both beautifully executed and durable and make a comeback and solid-surface countertops such as CaesarStone and Zodiaq are becoming more popular.
Hello Shelves
A lot of designers are opening up closed cabinets and using shelving instead to keep up with the trend of creating more open entertaining space in today’s homes. Since homeowners are hanging out and entertaining from their kitchens, they are more likely to want some art hanging on the walls and they want better sight lines with more decoration. In keeping with this theme, we are seeing more glass-front cabinets, open shelves, and stylish back splashes. People are relying on pantries more for their food storage.
Goodbye to the Traditional Work Triangle
The traditional setup involves having your fridge, sink, and stove form an imaginary triangle for easy of use. Since the kitchen is now the main spot for most families to gather, kitchen layouts our being design with different zones for different uses — one for kids, one for cooking, and one for the whole family to gather.
Wood-stain Cabinets Are On the Move
Another dying trend in kitchen cabinetry is lacquer finishes because with one ding in the cabinet, you will have to replace the whole door! Wood-stain finish is much more forgiving and it’s still protected by a top coat of polyurethane.
Lighter Colored Floors Are Coming Back
Dark floors can show more scratches and dust than a pale wood and making them a tough option for homeowners with children. Paler wood can help disguise a lot of activity.
