Seniors who would like to stay in their current residence may want to consider making these changes to their home and bathroom that will better meet their changing needs. Here are some renovations to consider when making your plans.
Main Floor Bathroom
A bathroom on the same floor as the living area will prevent seniors from having to climb up and down stairs. Eliminating stairs for seniors, decreases the chances of having a fall.
Accessible Showers and Tubs
Some showers and tubs can be difficult for seniors to get in and out of safely. Some easy changes can include: adding a shower or tub chair will make it easier to use, removing shower doors and replacing them with shower curtains will make the tub/shower more accessible. However, the best shower option for seniors, is a roll-in shower. This allows seniors with wheelchairs to take a shower without having to get out of their chair.
Shower/Tub Storage
Seniors should have easily accessible storage space that will allow them to easily reach their shampoo and soap. Consider having shelving that would allow seniors to easily reach over and grab while sitting in the shower chair or even a wheelchair.
Shower/Tub Floor and Fixtures
Some safety changes to the tub and shower include: add in a non-slip surface in the tub/shower will help eliminate slips and falls. Avoid bathroom rugs as they can cause seniors to slip or trip. In addition, be sure the faucets are clearly marked. If you choose lever models, they are much easier to use for people who have limited mobility. Installing a hand-held shower head that adjusts is another great option. Another safety option is to install an anti-scald valve. This will allow the water temperature to maintain a safe temperature even when water pressure in the home may change due to someone flushing the toilet.
Grab Bars
Installing a grab bar vertically near the entrance of the tub will assist with getting in and out of the shower safely. Also, install grab bars along the back and side walls to allow for support while standing in the shower or tub. It is also a good idea to install a grab bar near the toilet. This will give support to the person getting up from the toilet seat. A toilet seat extender is another safe option that will make the transition easier. However, be sure when you install the grab bars that you carefully read all of the instructions to install them properly. Towel bars are not grab bars and aren’t as secure. Be sure to not use a towel bar for support.
Choosing Sinks and Vanities
When you choose a new sink or vanity you may want to make sure you choose one that will accommodate someone who uses a wheelchair. Also, consider installing wall-mounted sinks. This will allow the user to pull right up and use the sink safely.
Bright Lighting
Adding bright lighting will allow seniors to better see to maneuver in, out, and around the bathroom. Ceiling fixtures and task lighting the sink and tubs will prevent glares and allow for better visibility.
Sufficient Floor Space
The bathroom should have a large enough space that can accommodate someone using a walker, wheelchair, or a cane. If the space is 60 inches of open floor space, this will allow sufficient space for someone to turn around. Also, doorways should be at least 32-36 inches wide to accommodate a wheelchair.
Making these changes to your home will help seniors live safely and comfortably for many years to come.
