The Dos and Don’ts of Kitchen Design

You want your kitchen to make a statement and you want it to be for your family and guests. Bring in elements from the other rooms in you house or local flair.

 

Do: Take your cabinetry up to your ceiling
Don’t: Leave space between your cabinets and the ceiling

If you don’t take your cabinets all the way to the the ceiling, you’ve just created a place for you to over accessorize and accumulate dust. Plus you need the storage!

 

Do: Know when to say when for your design
Don’t: Over design you new kitchen

Sometimes… less IS more. The mark of a good designer is to know the right amount of design and flair to use.

 

Do: Hide some of your appliances with cabinetry
Don’t: Go stainless-steel appliance crazy

Stainless steel is nice but a lot of kitchen designs over use it. Too many appliance can make the room feel small and it will also take away from the flow and pattern of the design.

 

Do: Know that a small kitchen can work
Don’t: Always think bigger is better

In small kitchens, over design is a key thing to worry about because you don’t want to clutter a small kitchen. The best designs for small kitchens involve creative ways for storage and multi use elements, like moving islands that can double for preparation or eating, etc.

 

Do: Give your kitchen some space
Don’t: Have nothing but walls of cabinets

The best designs are a combination of  storage, function, and aesthetics.  Leave some space above work areas and cooking areas to let your kitchen breathe.

 

Do: Invest in well built cabinets
Don’t: Skimp on craftsmanship

Think long term when deciding on what cabinets to purchase. What’s going still look great in 10 years? Cabinets take a beating with all the doors and drawers being opened so many times a day. Focus on hardwoods, good finishes, and strong hardware that can handle the use.

 

Do: Make sure to have enough counter space near your oven
Don’t: Strand you oven away from prep areas 

Do you really want to have to carry your latest dishes all the way across the room to prepare. Sometimes dishes and the food are heavy and it’s always hot. You want to be able to pull it out of the oven quickly and start your prep.
